Dreams and Goals

Dreams.

Everyone has them. They’re one of those small things that help us realize we are alive. Without the ability to dream, we tend to lose sight of what’s important to us at any given moment. This can be depressing and life tends to drag on. You might be asking what kind of dreams I’m talking about. The honest answer is that I don’t know. I think I’m talking about dreams of all kinds, whether you’re asleep or awake. Dreams can be refreshing, they can show us our inner-most fears, and they have the power to make us question ourselves on a level so fundamental that it can scare us. Some dreams can be terrifying. Overall, dreams are our brain trying to process information and make some sort of semblance of the stimuli we receive on a daily basis whether visual, auditory, tactile, or other.

During my 36 years in this world, I’ve had some rather wild dreams, both while asleep, and while awake. Some of these dreams have fallen by the wayside, forgotten to the passage of time, and still some stick with me, as bright and vivid as the day I’ve had them.

For me, dreams are a sacred thing. They allow me to explore the world around me, and they allow me to experience things never before seen. Dreams allow me to venture forth into worlds that would otherwise be impossible to explore.

I’ve had a lot of dreams over the years, and I’ve managed to make some of these dreams come true.

I’ve been to Japan

I’ve done the impossible and transitioned the gender barrier after undertaking hormone replacement therapy and going in for bottom surgery in 2013.

I’ve gone back to school, and as of this posting, I sit a few short months away from a Bachelor’s degree in Communications.

I’ve been in or travelled through every province in Canada with the exception of Newfoundland, and I’ve seen the ocean on both sides of my home country.

All in all, my dreams and goals have allowed me to do amazing things with my life.

I’ve been to the US on a few different occasions (New York, Chicago, Indiana), and Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Mishima, and Ito).

One thing that my dreams have made clear is I’m not the type of person who can easily fit into what is considered “normal” in this life (what is normal, anyways? Can someone please explain this to me? I’ve never understood this). I’m pretty sure when they made me, they ended up breaking the mold that made me, which would explain a lot.

But that’s enough about my past and what I’ve done. Let’s look at what I dream for the future.

By this time, if you know me at all, you know I have one singular goal in mind: Travel. You know I’m a travel fanatic, and I consume all the media I can on travel-related topics, even if it seems out of reach for me. Sure, I get down sometimes, especially when it comes to limitations, but I also firmly belive that limitations are meant to be challenged and possibly broken. And thus, the idea of a travel house was born. I love the idea of being in a home on wheels (especially in this trash economy) and seeing the world for what it is: A place of beauty, and wonder, just waiting to be explored.

….so this week, I set aside my first $20 towards that goal, even though I’m a relatively poor student with a mountain of debt, who can’t work while going to school. Well, can’t work your typical jobs. The idea is to buy a bus or a van, and convert it into a living space for myself and my husband so we can shed our stagnant and hum-drum lives, in hopes of making something better for us. Allowing us to see North America.

And then it hit me this morning. If I’m going to be converting a bus, why would I stop at just North America? With travel options today, why not make it a world tour, documenting our journeys along the way for others? Imagine the amount of content out there that’s just waiting to be captured. North America.
South America.
Europe.
Asia.
Africa.
Oceana.
…and yes, if we can manage it, Antarctica.

All 7 continents. With memories to look back on in our old age. A lifestyle that is ours. Something we can share together, while always experiencing something new. Never in the same spot for long. I think as long as I can keep, and hold on to this dream, it’ll give me something to work towards. A goal to achieve. And it’s going to be absolutely mind-blowing.
